Ballet is a type of performance dance that originated in the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th century and later developed into a concert dance form in France and Russia. It has since become a widespread, highly technical form of dance with its own vocabulary. Contemporary / Lyrical

Contemporary dance is a term usually referring to the 20th century concert dance that combines elements of modern dance and classical ballet. It does not refuse classical ballet’s leg technique in favor of modern dance’s stress on the torso, while it also employs contact-release, floor work, fall and improvisation characteristic of modern dance. Unpredictable changes in rhythm, speed, and direction are often used, as well.

Freestyle / Jazz

Freestyle dancing can apply to numerous dance types and where no choreography occurs before the dance begins. The dancer is literally thinking on his or her feet in this sense, and it can be done in almost all dance forms. As freestyle implies, the dancer is free to make it up as he or she goes, though someone who is dancing a waltz generally won’t freestyle into a different dance form like the tango.
